We've all seen those mesmerizing videos and photos of Coldplay concerts online, haven't we? The vibrant lights, the sea of swaying phone lights, and the sheer energy – it all looks incredible, almost surreal. You can't help but wonder, "Is it really as magical as it seems?" We were on the fence too, skeptical about whether the hype was justified. We finally got the chance to experience it firsthand, and now, we're eager to share our genuine experience with all of you who are planning to see them live or are already counting down the days.
Before the Concert
Getting inside the venue
Our concert venue was located at Merkur Spiel-Arena in Düsseldorf, Germany. As first-timers, we arrived two hours early and had to wait in queue. If you have seating tickets, we highly recommend arriving exactly at the gate opening time or shortly after. There's no need to queue for hours beforehand. However, if you're in the standing area and want a spot close to the front stage, arriving early might be beneficial. But honestly, it's not entirely necessary as they have another stage at the back where the band performs, allowing you to see them up close from a different perspective! We advise having a proper meal and drinks before reaching the venue, especially if you plan to stand in queue. The entry process was smooth; you simply enter the venue by scanning your ticket. Upon entry, you'll receive a wristband, moon goggles, and love buttons to wear. We requested two wristbands per person (yes, that's allowed!), and we're glad we did because one of them malfunctioned later!
What to Wear & Bring
Wear comfortable clothes depending on the weather at the venue. And most importantly, comfortable shoes as you'll likely be standing for a significant portion of the concert, even with seating tickets. Carry only essential items like your ID, phone/camera and phone chargers. Refrain from bringing your own food or water bottles as its not allowed inside the venue and normally the venue offers ample food and drink options throughout the concert. Be sure to check the official venue website for gate opening times and a list of prohibited items.
What makes Coldplay cool?
What truly sets Coldplay apart is their dedication to making their concerts environmentally friendly. Before the show even begins, they encourage fans to contribute to the concert's energy needs. Unique features like kinetic dance floors allow concertgoers to generate energy by simply dancing, making for an incredibly fun and interactive experience. Additionally, stationary bikes are set up throughout the venue, inviting fans to pedal and contribute to the concert's power supply. To minimize plastic waste, the colorful wristbands distributed to fans are collected back at the end of the concert to be reused. While some may be tempted to keep them as souvenirs, we encourage you to return them and support Coldplay's commitment to sustainability. Furthermore, Coldplay goes the extra mile by providing free transportation to the concert venue as part of the ticket purchase, significantly reducing the carbon footprint of their events.
The Concert Experience
The Opening Act
The opening act usually features a couple of up-and-coming artists. In our case, it was performed by two young singers. To be honest, we weren't very familiar with them, so we were mostly waiting for Coldplay to take the stage. If you're not particularly interested in the opening acts, feel free to arrive later to catch Coldplay's performance directly.
Coldplay Takes the Stage
The anticipation was building! While we waited for Coldplay, the crowd was electric. Waves of cheers surged through the stadium, and everyone was clapping along to imaginary tunes. It was the perfect way to build excitement for their arrival. Finally, the video screens flickered to life, showing the band members entering the stage from the back and waving to the crowd. The roar was deafening! They then walked along the side of the stage, building the suspense, before finally climbing onto the main stage. The moment we'd all been waiting for had arrived!
Chris Martin greeted the crowd with a warm welcome and then launched into their electrifying opener, Higher Power. The fans erupted, singing along with every word. Soon, beloved classics like Viva La Vida, Hymn for the Weekend, and Paradise followed, each song delivering a unique vibe. During The Scientist, Chris captivated the audience with a breathtaking piano performance.
But the surprises didn't stop there! In a truly unexpected moment, Chris invited a security guard to join him on stage for a spontaneous dance-off during Something Just Like This. It was a hilarious and heartwarming highlight of the night. Chris also invited a lucky fan on stage to share the spotlight during Green Eyes, so get creative with your signs if you dream of that moment! The real magic happened with Yellow and Fix You. The entire stadium sang along in unison, creating an atmosphere that was both peaceful and unforgettable.
"Sky Full of Stars" Moment
Ah, Sky Full of Stars! This was the moment we'd all been waiting for. Chris urged us to put down our phones and truly experience the magic of the song. After capturing a few quick videos, we switched off our screens and it was incredible. The stadium transformed into a sea of shimmering lights with the wristband effects. It was a breathtaking sight, and the song itself was simply mesmerizing. As the song ended, a dazzling fireworks display erupted, the perfect time to put on those moon goggles and soak it all in.
The Closing Act
During the final section of the show, the band moved to a stage at the back of the arena. Here, they engaged in a fun and interactive segment with the crowd. A cameraman randomly focused on audience members, and Chris interacted with them directly, creating some truly memorable moments. This interactive section was a fantastic way to end the concert on a high note.

We truly created some incredible memories at this concert. Looking back, we can confidently say that it was absolutely worth the hype. We spent the next day reliving all the amazing moments, and our minds couldn't stop replaying the scenes – and we weren't complaining at all! It was a truly unforgettable experience. If you're a Coldplay fan, this concert should definitely be on your bucket list.
